|A False Holy Spirit
The Jehovah's Witnesses - in denying the Trinity - must obviously deny the person and the deity of the Holy Spirit, teaching that the 'spirit' is an impersonal force such as wind or electricty, that is used by God to implement His will. As you will see below, nothing could be further from the truth.
Scripture does not use words carelessly. 'He' means 'He' and 'it' means 'it'. Jesus always referred to the Spirit as 'He' or 'Him'
"The Spirit of truth ..you will know HIM.." John 14:17
"All that the Father has is Mine, therefore I said that HE the Holy Spirit will take what is Mine and declare it to you" John 16:15
"And I will pray the Father and He will send you another Counsellor, that He may abide with you forever - the Spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be IN you." John 14:16-17
There are two Greek words for another - one word means 'similar to' and the other means 'identical to'. The word used here 'allos' means 'identical to'. That is identical to Jesus - The Counsellor (Isaiah 9:6) and The Truth (John 14:6). This could not refer to an impersonal force! Note also that Jesus talks of His Father as 'HE' and the Spirit as 'He'.
"But the Counsellor (or Helper in some versions) the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things.." John 14:26
Then Peter said to Annanias, "Annanias, how is it that satan has so filled you your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit. You have not lied to to men but to God" Acts 5:3-4
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God Romans 8:16*
For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered Romans 8: 26*
*Some earlier translations put the word 'itself' into the two verses above instead of 'Himself' This is generally accepted by most translators as a faulty translation and few versions would carry that word in these two scriptures today. For more details on the translation of the word Paul used click here.
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2nd Corinthians 3:17
God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Galatians 4:5
For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ Philippians 1:19
Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils 1st Timothy 4:1
The Spirit of God is still saying the same thing right now to all who have ears to hear
This simple chart combined with scripture shows the reality of the Trinity, the oneness of the Trinity and of course the reality of the Person of the Holy Spirit. For the purpose of this exercise we will term the Father as 'One' - The Son as 'Two' and the Spirit as 'Three'
