A False Holy Spirit

The Jehovah's Witnesses - in denying the Trinity - must obviously deny the person and the deity of the Holy Spirit, teaching that the 'spirit' is an impersonal force such as wind or electricty, that is used by God to implement His will.   As you will see below, nothing could be further from the truth.

One What did Jesus say about The Spirit ?   Two What did the Apostles say about the Spirit?
Three Who lives in us when we are born again?

What did Jesus say about The Spirit?

Scripture does not use words carelessly. 'He' means 'He' and 'it' means 'it'. Jesus always referred to the Spirit as 'He' or 'Him'

"The Spirit of truth ..you will know HIM.."  John 14:17

"All that the Father has is Mine, therefore I said that HE the Holy Spirit will take what is Mine and declare it to you"  John 16:15

"And I will pray the Father and He will send you another Counsellor, that He may abide with you forever - the Spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be IN you."  John 14:16-17

There are two Greek words for another - one word means 'similar to' and the other means 'identical to'. The word used here 'allos' means 'identical to'. That is identical to Jesus - The Counsellor (Isaiah 9:6) and The Truth (John 14:6). This could not refer to an impersonal force! Note also that Jesus talks of His Father as 'HE' and the Spirit as 'He'.

"But the Counsellor (or Helper in some versions) the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things.."  John 14:26

What did the Apostles say about the Spirit?

Then Peter said to Annanias, "Annanias, how is it that satan has so filled you your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit. You have not lied to to men but to God"  Acts 5:3-4

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God  Romans 8:16*

For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered  Romans 8: 26*

*Some earlier translations put the word 'itself' into the two verses above instead of 'Himself'  This is generally accepted by most translators as a faulty translation and few versions would carry that word in these two scriptures today. For more details on the translation of the word Paul used click here.

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2nd Corinthians 3:17

God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Galatians 4:5

For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ Philippians 1:19

Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils  1st Timothy 4:1

The Spirit of God is still saying the same thing right now to all who have ears to hear

Who lives in us when we are born again?

This simple chart combined with scripture shows the reality of the Trinity, the oneness of the Trinity and of course the reality of the Person of the Holy Spirit. For the purpose of this exercise we will term the Father as 'One' - The Son as 'Two' and the Spirit as 'Three'

"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple, and that God's Spirit lives in you"

1st Corinthians 3:16

My Father (One) will love him and We (One & Two) will come to him and make our home IN him. John 14:23

man.gif (2293 bytes)

You are in the Spirit (Three) if the Spirit of God (One) lives IN you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit (Three) does not have the Spirit of Christ (Two) does not belong to Him  Romans 8:9
God (One) hath sent forth the Spirit (Three) of his Son (Two) INTO your hearts, crying, "Abba, Father". Galatians 4:5

Baptising them in the NAME of the Father (One) the Son (Two) and the Holy Spirit (Three) Matthew 28:19 *

And I (Two) will pray the Father (One) and He will send you another Helper that He may abide with you forever - the Spirit of Truth (Three) whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be IN you.  John 14:16-17

*So while Christians are baptised into the 'Name' (singular) of God (that is the Father Son and Holy Spirit) the Jehovah's Witnesses are baptised into a strange mixture of Jehovah + Michael the Archangel + an impersonal force!  Not only a strange baptism but a false baptism.

This illustration is also used in the Trinity section

Note: In Romans 8:16 and 26 Paul does use the word 'autos' referring the The Spirit and I quote from Strong's concordance #846 in order to show the complexity of the word Paul uses ..'from the particle au[perh akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind] (bakward); the reflex.pron. self, used (alone or in the comp.1438) of the third person, and (with the prop. pers.pron;) of the other persons:- her, it (self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, ([self-], the) same, ([him-, my-(-s) thy-]) self, [your-] selves, she, that, their (-s), them ([-selves]), there [-at], -by, -in, -into, of, on, - with], they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which .Comp. 848   (#1438 referred to here = him, her, it, them, my, thy, etc and #848 = her own, himself, his own, their own, themselves etc)
