Keeping intruders out.

To one measure or another, we all do our best to guard our computers against viruses which are cleverly designed to steal kill and destroy what is rightfully ours and so we install expensive anti-virus software and firewalls to protect our online ‘kingdom’.

We are also continually alert to the reality that we could be deceived through an email or text which on the surface appears to be safe but later turns out to be a deceptive way of getting past our defenses. Just last week (as I write this) for the first time in years I was caught out by a text appearing to be from O2 telling me I needed to confirm my account details immediately otherwise my service would be effected. I considered it could be a scam for a few moments but as I checked the email address it had o2 in it and it was in the same tone of voice and style as their regular texts so I clicked on the link and began to fill in the requested details. Suddenly I realised it must be a scam and stopped. But I had already opened the page with my password. Sure enough next day o2 warned their customers that the clever email was a scam and any who gave details should immediately change their password, which I did. It once again emphasised the vital importance of knowing where the communication emerged from rather than simply trusting what it says on the text.

As Christians I wish we were all as determined and alert to guard ourselves against spiritual intruders slipping silently past our defenses. The devil is the master deceiver who intends to steal kill and destroy, and he knows how to bait a hook. He knows how to dress the offering he sets before us. He knows how to get past our natural defenses.

Which brings me to Reiki.

Reiki means ‘universal life energy’ and is described as ‘an energy healing treatment that works holistically; on the whole body, mind and spirit...a relaxing treatment where natural healing vibrations are transmitted through the hands of a Reiki practitioner (acting as a conduit) to the body of the recipient’ Millions have submitted themselves to a Reiki practitioner with many claiming a measure of health and healing. Indeed in the USA over 800 hospitals have now embraced the practice.

Reiki claims to ‘relieve stress and pain, induce relaxation, release emotional blockages, accelerate natural healing, balance subtle bodies energies’. Trials recorded in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine concluded, ‘Of the 13 suitable studies, 8 demonstrated Reiki being more effective than placebo, 4 found no difference but had questionable statistical resolving power, and only one provided clear evidence for not providing benefit. Viewed collectively, these studies provide reasonably strong support for Reiki being more effective than placebo. It went on to say, ‘Reiki is a safe, gentle, and profoundly relaxing healing modality that can be practiced by anyone who received an ‘attunement’ from a Reiki master’.

The study stated ‘Although there is currently no scientific explanation for this, the clinical trial evidence is compelling’. However, as Christians we need to look deeper than secular studies on results. It is important we know where this extremely popular ‘complimentary healing’ has emerged from and what the Reiki masters say about it. It was developed in Japan in the 1920s by Miko Usui - a seeker of spiritual truths - and during a Reiki session a practitioner will place their hands on or above the person’s body and move them slowly about to ‘balance its flow of energy’. Earlier I mentioned the important statement that Reiki ‘can be practiced by anyone who received an ‘attunement’ from a Reiki master’.

Patricia Loughlin is a registered Reiki master and teacher and her website provides ample details to those wishing to attend her workshops. Reiki 1 workshop includes healing with the angels. Reiki 2 workshop includes healing with the angels and neuro-linguistic programming.

Reiki 3 workshop is described as follows. ‘This Very Powerful, Informative Reiki 3/Mastership Workshop is suited to those who wish to continue using Reiki for their own Personal Holistic Healing Journey. Becoming attuned to the Master Reiki symbol will unlock the full potential of the Reiki Energy (6 TIMES MORE POWERFUL) to greatly empower your own personal healing’.

Her web site has a whole section on angels. ‘Angels are high and beautiful beings of Light. Messengers from God who are ready and willing to help us in every way possible..They are waiting and longing to help but under Spiritual Law, as we have free will, they cannot do so unless you ask them to...We each have our own Guardian Angel who is with us at all times lovingly radiating light and guidance...Along with your Guardian Angel there are Angels of healing, Angels of love, Angels of protection, Angels of your home, your car etc. ...It is helpful to take time to center yourself, calm turbulent emotions and breathe in and surround yourself with the colour gold, the colour Angels vibrate at, making it easier for them to connect with you’. The site goes on to speak about the Reiki life force ‘that flows through the physical body through pathways called chakras. When you are channeling Reiki it flows into you through your chakras’. She states, ‘There are seven major chakras and twenty-one minor chakras. Each chakra has a physical, emotional and spiritual influence on the body parts nearest to it. The use of a pendulum dowser can indicate the condition of the chakras’

The site also talks about Psychic surgery, Fire energy, water energy and Air energy. I think by now you get an idea of the depth of spirituality behind Reiki. The students will be attuned to the Reiki master and will then be able to place hands upon or above a submitting person and channel Reiki life force. God and angels are mentioned. No mention of Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

As Christians we need to discern whether what is being imparted is Light as claimed. Or darkness.

I’ll finish with Philippians 1:9-10 ‘And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.
