Are we right to expect a
great end time revival?

Written March 4th 2003

For years now there has been intense and prolonged levels of interest in the subject of a great 'last days world wide revival'

In the United Kingdom and Ireland for instance, there has been prophecy after prophecy, conference after conference, seeking to excite and to prepare the church for this event, and this event alone.

How much of this fervour is Holy Spirit led and how much is human spirit led is - as always until there is the benefit of hindsight - hard to discern.

The unnerving thing is that over the past decade all the specific date stamped prophecies have come to nothing.  Many respected figures claimed that God's Spirit had given them 'the' date and 'the' place where this mighty revival would break out, but so far 100% have proved to be false prophecies.  Well intended, but false.  Therefore not of God.

One well known and highly respected Christian - a man much used of God - even prepared his family to move from the USA to England because he knew that a great revival would break out in October of that year at his conference.  It didn't happen and he returned to the USA.

Eleven years ago I heard a prophecy saying that a great revival would break out on the west coast of Ireland and sweep up through the north and then down the east coast until the whole country was on fire. Then a Southern Irish pastor told me that a visiting speaker prophesied that revival would break out in his deep southern town and sweep north. Then I heard that the revival would break out in Scotland and sweep over to Northern Ireland and then head south. Which was the Lord and which was man?  A decade has not answered that as so far there has been no revival.

One well known Christian interviewed on British Television told a listening nation in the wake of Diana's death that revival would sweep over the nation as quickly as the flowers of her funeral began to fade.  It didn't happen. Still hasn't happened. He clearly felt that he had heard from God. Clearly he had not.

I felt relieved when, several years ago, I read the back page editorial of a popular prophecy magazine which, while still holding to the belief that a mighty revival was coming, pleaded with the prophetic community to stop naming the expected date as so far all such prophecies had proven to be false.

There are - as we will shortly read of - wonderful promises in scripture regarding the times we live in, but what leaves me unsettled about much of the 'revival is coming' activity is the lack of scriptural balance.

I think it's the right string being plucked all right, but the string is clearly out of tune because it has no opposite point to be tensioned against.

And that is what this paper is about.  It is not intended to be a deep theological paper about end times. I'm not smart enough for that.  It just seeks to bring some healthy tension into the vision by skimming a stone over last days scripture and relevant current events.  (When daring to step into this end times arena one is so aware that - as Paul says - 'we see through a glass darkly')

So let's make a start..

There is a common belief within the Body of Christ- which I agree with wholeheartedly -  that we are in, or are rapidly approaching, end times

Scripture refers to time or 'times' using a variety of terms

Former days / latter days / times past / last days / fullness of times / end of age / time of the end..

Each dispensation was 'a time' or 'an age' so for instance

Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

God gathers together in one all things in Christ, at the fullness of all the times (plural)

Ephesians 1:10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him.

The problem is that many think that the term 'last days' and 'end of the age' are both the same thing.

There is some truth in this, as the end of the age is part of the last days period, but the lack of understanding has, I believe, led to a  misunderstanding of some last days Biblical prophecies.

The ‘last day’s or ‘last times’ in scripture refers to the time from the cross onwards - so far a period some 30 years short of  2000 years.

Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

1 Peter 1:20  He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you

James spoke of the current time he was living in as 'the last days'.

James 5:1  Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.

Barnes commentary states of the ‘last days’ or 'last times'..

In this the final dispensation; or in this dispensation under which the affairs of the world will be wound up. Phrases similar to this occur frequently in the Scriptures. They do not imply that the world was soon coming to an end, but that that was the last dispensation, the last period of the world.

The failure to understand this has meant that people have interpreted Joel's 'last days' prophecy as referring exclusively to the 'end of the age''.  I have sat under teaching on more than one occasion where the speaker was excited about the 'coming revival' because Joel had prophesied that God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh 'in the last days' and that we were surely in the last days right now.

Peter clearly explained on the Day of Pentecost that the outpouring of God’s Spirit that was happening right in front of them in 33 A.D was the fulfillment of that part of Joel's last days prophecy.

Acts 2:15 "For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.

Albert Barnes commentary states

If, as I suppose, "that notable day of the Lord" here denotes that future time when God shall manifest himself in judgment, then we are not to suppose that Peter meant to say that these "wonders" should take place on the day of Pentecost, or had their fulfilment then; but would occur under that indefinite period called "the last days," the days of the Messiah, and before that period was closed by the great day of the Lord.

All major outpourings starting at the Day of Pentecost have been - and continue to be - the fulfilment of that prophecy.  Therefore there is no reason why God's Spirit would not be poured out on all flesh right now as we are still in the last days, but this is NOT an 'end times' prophecy still waiting for its fulfillment. It has been, and is still being fulfilled in many countries today such as China, Brazil, Alaska and Argentina.

However there was a second part, a less popular part, to Joel's last days prophecy which Peter also quoted on the Day of Pentecost.

A second part which clearly was not fulfilled at Pentecost, nor has been since. Yet a part still assigned to within the 'last days' period.

A second part which will only have its fulfillment at the end of this church age  Joel says its fulfillment will be before the great and awesome 'day of the Lord'

Acts 2:19: I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapour of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord

In other words Joel's last days prophecy not only opens this present age of church history within the last days at Pentecost - but also closes this present age at the second coming of the Lord. (Joel's words cross reference with the end time details given by Jesus in Matthew 24 and also the sixth seal in Revelation).

There have been many ages in scripture.

Ephesians 3:5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets

Ephesians 3:9 which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;

And there are ages to come..

Ephesians 2:6-7 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

The gospel writers spoke of the age they were in as this present age.

1st Timothy 6:17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.

1st Timothy  2:12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,

An age where satan and his cohorts exercised great power over the earth..

2nd Corinthians 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Therefore  the term ‘the end of the age’ (not ages) refers to the closing chapter of the sixth day (explained later) when Jesus returns.

Jesus assured His disciples that He would be with us even until that time.

Matthew 28:20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

After that of course, they will be with Him!

Christ's return at the end of the age is when the harvest will be sorted out by the angels

Matthew 13:39 "The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.

Matthew 13:40 "Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.

Matthew 13:49 "So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just,

In these (almost) 2000 years of 'last days' since the cross we have had the 'former rain' which began at Pentecost and lasted for several hundred years. Then following the long dryness of the dark ages the earth has been experiencing the 'latter rain' for nearly 300 years.

James 5:7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.

The former rain began suddenly with a dramatic outpouring at Pentecost and over three centuries gradually decreased.  It is certain that the latter day rain is building up to a dramatic outpouring before suddenly stopping at the end of the age because we have God's Word

Haggai 2:9  The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,' says the Lord of hosts.

Early church outpouring                                                                        Latter Day Church outpouring

What a latter day outpouring it has been and continues to be!  The online Revival Library lists the many great awakenings since 1727. These are categorized as The First Great Awakening of 1727-. The Second Great Awakening of 1792 -. The Third Great Awakening of 1830 -. The Fourth Great Awakening of 1857 -. The Fifth Great Awakening 1880 -. The Sixth Great Awakening 1904 -. Then the twentieth Century Revivals - Pentecostal  - Evangelical and finally - Charismatic 1992 -1995

The popular 'Transformations' videos reveal the recent dramatic changes within nations and communities throughout the world as this latter rain pours out mightily upon them.

Which people group will the Spirit of God pour out upon tomorrow?  How long will this outpouring last?  Who but God knows.  As Jesus explained to Nicodemus,

John 3:8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes

It is important at this stage to have some idea of where we are on God's calendar so let me explain my understanding of the Biblical timeline.

Scripture speaks of a day being as a thousand years and a thousand years being as a day to the Lord.

2 Peter 3:8  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

From Adam to Abraham is reckoned as 2000 years and from Abraham to Christ as 2000 years, a total of 4000 years..or 4 days.

This is a vital clue in seeking to understand the Bible's timeline.

In Exodus chapter 12 God tells Moses to change the calendar. The 7th month was now to be the first month. On the 10th day of this new first month the Israelites were to take a male lamb and keep it indoors for 4 days. Then on the 14th day they were to bring it out and kill it at twilight, making sure that none of its bones were broken.

These 4 days may be called the 4 days of the hidden lamb.

This lamb of course was the type for the Lamb of God.

Indeed Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the 10th day of that same Passover month and the people thought He was a conqueror coming to depose the Romans.  However on the 14th day of that month He was revealed as the Lamb, and at twilight He was killed and none of His bones broken.  Just as the blood of the Passover lamb had protected the Israelites and provided for their deliverance from Pharaoh's kingdom under Moses so the Blood of The Lamb protects us and provides for our deliverance from satan's kingdom under Jesus.

These 4 days may be called the 4 days of the hidden lamb.

Going one step deeper we see that Jesus, the Lamb of God, was slain from the foundation of the world, and so for the 4000 years, or 4 days, He was the 'hidden Lamb'

1 Peter 1:18-21 .. knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Revelation 13:7-8 It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

God the Son appeared many times in the Old Testament but was always hidden as such. These appearances are referred to as Theophanies.  For example

Joshua 5:13-15 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, "Are You for us or for our adversaries?" So He said, "No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, "What does my Lord say to His servant?" Then the Commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, "Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy." And Joshua did so.

At the end of the 'fourth day' the Lamb was slain for the world, thus starting the fifth day on God's timeline.

Now, some 2000 years into the New Testament days, we find ourselves approaching the very end of the sixth day.  [Read]

In Biblical understanding each new day starts with evening, at sunset.

Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

The world instinctively held its breath as the year 2000 drew near. Even masses of Christians prepared for a world shaking event. Millions of computers were expected to crash. Few took a flight on that day.  When the day came and went the world breathed again and normal life resumed.

The suddenly, shockingly, on September 11, 2001 every nation witnessed the most world shaking event ever captured on film. We all knew in our hearts that a line had been crossed. The world would never be the same again.  The west's response to this event triggered off more atrocities. The middle east became even more of a cauldron ready to boil over. Suddenly no one could feel secure. A new kind of fear took root and still lies just beneath the surface of society. Hearts faint at the merest hint of a terrorist threat on a news bulletin.  Fear. Fear. More fear.

The world is rapidly becoming a more dangerous place as dusk begins to gather towards the end of the sixth day.  The stage is being well set for the entrance of the 'man' who can promise safety.

The seventh day, the Sabbath Day, the day of rest, is known as 'the Day of the Lord' which means the 'thousand years of the Lord' is the period when Christ reigns with the saints for 1000 years and satan is bound for 1000 years. (see Revelation chapter 20)  There is judgment on rebellious man but the earth finally gets its Sabbath rest.

Christ's Glory will be truly revealed to the world after the six days (i.e. the seventh day)  This was prefigured on the Mount of Transfiguration (Mount Hermon)

Mark 9:2 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them.

Hosea prophesied a three 'day' period after the events of the cross which do not refer to Christ's own resurrection.

Hosea 6:2  After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight.

He prophesied this for the Jewish nation who have suffered so much over two thousand years, but of course it also speaks to us as believers.

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Bible scholar Kevin J.Conner quotes the following verse as one of the seventh day scriptures

Isaiah 30:26 Moreover the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, And the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, In the day that the Lord binds up the bruise of His people And heals the stroke of their wound.

Interesting thought..

If ..and it is if.. the terrible events of September 11, 2001 were indeed a timeline marker then it is worth including the verse that immediately precedes the above verse.

Isaiah 30:25  There will be on every high mountain And on every high hill rivers and streams of waters, In the day of the great slaughter, When the towers fall.

If the fall of the towers was a timeline marker then it reveals two things. One is that the latter day rain may be about to increase greatly - and at the same time - that we have now crossed the line into the period known as the 'end of the age'

Finally the 'morrow after the Sabbath' - which symbolizes new beginning and points dispensationally to the New Heavens and the New Earth and the New Jerusalem.

Then comes the end, when He (Jesus) delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. (1 Corinthians 15:24-25)

It is understandable that we should all desperately want The Spirit of God to awaken our church, our nation, our community, ourselves, in the days ahead. That is a good and Godly desire. However scripture does not focus on this one end time aspect only, and to stay in tune with the One who inspired scripture neither should we. It is tempting for teachers to shun the whole counsel of God on each string of truth as some of it is less palatable than others.  Paul was no different but he resisted that temptation.

Acts 20:27 "For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.

The New Testament writers at the start of this 'last days' age pointed to various negatives that would become relevant towards the latter part of this present age.  Paul writing in a period of terrible Roman persecution warned of perilous days that lay ahead for the church.

2 Timothy 3:1  But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons

Perilous days and believers being deceived and departing from the faith. Even revival will not stop this happening.  It is written, and written to warn us of very difficult and treacherous days.

Likewise Peter warned the church of days ahead within the last days period.

2 Peter 3:3 .. knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation."

As we have seen, the latter part of Joel’s prophecy - referred to in Acts - has yet to be fulfilled and this fulfillment will come at the end of this age as it cross references with Jesus’ teaching on the events at the end of this age and also with the sixth seal in the Book of Revelation.

Matthew 24:3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"

Note that this was three questions in one sentence. Jesus had just been speaking of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.  The disciples asked privately 1. Tell us when will these things be?  2. and, what will be the sign of your coming?  3. and, of the end of the age?  One has to therefore carefully unpick the answers to the three questions in the answer Jesus gave them.

Matthew 24:4 -51  And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. "For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. "And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. "All these are the beginning of sorrows. "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. "And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. "Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. "And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. "But he who endures to the end shall be saved.  "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations and then the end will come. "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), "then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. "Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. "And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. "But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! "And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. "For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. "And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened. "Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it.  "For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.  "See, I have told you beforehand. "Therefore if they say to you, 'Look, He is in the desert!' do not go out; or 'Look, He is in the inner rooms!' do not believe it. "For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. "For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together. "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven r, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. "And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.  "Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. "So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near--at the doors! "Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. "But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. "For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, "and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. "Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. "Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. "Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. "But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. "Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. "Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? "Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. "Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. "But if that evil servant says in his heart, 'My master is delaying his coming,' "and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, "the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, "and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

When asked to describe significant end of the age events before He returned Jesus gave not even a hint of a world wide revival. In His private talk to them he referred them to what 'Daniel the prophet' spoke of - as recorded in Daniel chapter 12. Presumably He would still refer us to this portion of scripture.

Daniel 12:1-13  "At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever. "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase." Then I, Daniel, looked; and there stood two others, one on this riverbank and the other on that riverbank. And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, "How long shall the fulfilment of these wonders be?" Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished. Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, "My Lord, what shall be the end of these things?" And he said, "Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. "Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. "And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. "Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days. "But you, go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days."

Other than the few positive words 'Many shall be purified, made white, and refined' the words are full of dark events.  We ignore them at our peril.

I personally have no doubt from both scripture and today's observable facts that we are shortly about to face increasing darkness and persecution. I have been teaching this for many years and now we see the darkness increasing and the potential for persecution increasing on issues such as the Lordship of Jesus Christ, homosexuality, evolution. (see editorial)

Jesus said that God's elect would be gathered from the four corners of the earth when the trumpet blows.

Matthew 24:31 "And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Six verses earlier He tells us that in the days leading up to that ingathering there would be such clever spiritual deceptions that even the elect could be deceived.

Matthew 24:24 "For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

These terrible days preceding the trumpet call which will include such satanic deception would be shortened by God for the sake of the elect..

Matthew 24:21-22 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. "And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened.

While this coming tribulation is a cast iron certainty there has been passionate debate over which point the believers will be removed or 'raptured' from the dark days that lie ahead.

The word 'rapture' is never actually used in Scripture but is the term used to describe events spoken of by Paul in 1st Thessalonians (which tie in so accurately with the teachings of Jesus above)

1 Thessalonians 4:15-17  For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Again in his second letter to the church at Thessalonica Paul talks of these end of the age events that would precede the return of Jesus.

He spoke not of a world wide revival but of great satanic deception and a falling away - apostasy - of even the elect.  (Some teach that this falling away meant falling away from earth towards heaven via the rapture, but the word used for falling away is <apostasia> which means 'defection from truth, falling away, forsake' and is where we get the word apostasy from)

2 Thessalonians 2:1-17  Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.

The first three chapters of Revelation record Jesus addressing the seven churches. Some believe that since 'the church' is thereafter not mentioned it must no longer exist upon the earth and therefore believers will perhaps experience the 'beginning of sorrows' but taste nothing of the great tribulation at all.  John's hearing a trumpet and being asked to "come up here and I will show you things which must take place after this" at the opening of chapter 4 is seen as symbolic of the rapture.

Revelation 4:1-2 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, "Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this." Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.

Thus for this camp the rapture and the second coming in Chapter 20 are widely separated events.

Others hold that the 'rapture' will occur during the tribulation events of the sixth seal in Revelation 6:12 where the saints 'come out of the tribulation'.  The church is 'kept out of ' the darkest hour of this consummate judgement upon the earth, but is present during the earlier segments of the great tribulation in accordance with Jesus' words in Matthew 24: 29-31

Revelation 7:13-14 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, "Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?" And I said to him, "Sir, you know." So he said to me, "These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

For this camp the rapture and the second coming are also separated events - though not as far apart as the first camp.

Still others see the 'rapture' occurring at the events described in Revelation 19:14 after the tribulation. The armies in heaven are the glorified saints described some seven verses earlier at the Marriage feast of the Lamb when His wife (the church) has finally 'made herself ready'.

Revelation 19:7-8 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready." And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

This camp believe that Paul's prophecy on the 'coming of the Lord' (in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17)  is the second coming, and thus the rapture and the second coming occur at the same point on God's timeline.

One verse of scripture can be claimed by many camps - each taking a different view on it.  [Read]

Indeed so diverse is the understanding on the events of Revelation and so strongly held are the various beliefs that there are EIGHT different Christian interpretations printed at the back of my New King James Bible.

  1. Pre-millennial Pre-tribulational view.  All believers are raptured before the great tribulation. The rapture and the Second coming are separate events. Tribulation and Millennium are literal 7 year and 1000 year periods.
  2. Pre-millennial Post-tribulational view.  All believers are raptured at the end of the great tribulation. The rapture and the Second Coming are the same event. Tribulation and Millennium are literal 7 year and 1000 year periods.
  3. Pre-millennial Mid-tribulational view. All believers are raptured after 42 months (1260 days) of the great 7 year tribulation. The rapture and the Second coming are separate events. Tribulation and Millennium are literal 7 year and 1000 year periods.
  4. Pre-millennial Post-tribulational  Partial rapture view. Only some believers will be raptured before the great tribulation. Those 'unready' must be martyred to verify their faith. The rapture and the Second coming are separate events. Tribulation and Millennium are literal 7 year and 1000 year periods.
  5. Pre-millennial pre- wrath rapture view. All believers are raptured during the great tribulation, but prior to the 'day of the Lord's wrath' (Rev 6:17)  The rapture and the Second coming are separate events. Tribulation and Millennium are literal 7 year and 1000 year periods.
  6. Evangelical post-millennial view. The tribulation is age long, not seven years. The millennium is a literal 1,000 year reign of Christ, realized through the churches ministry of the Kingdom of God,
  7. St. Augustine's Amillennial view.  The book of Revelation is symbolic of God's Kingdom's triumphing through the church  The great tribulation and the millennium are not 7 year and 1000 year periods but are symbolic terms for the age long struggle of evil against Christ's rule.
  8. A second Amillennial view.  Attributed to B.B. Warfirld; The same as St. Augustine's view except that the Kingdom of God is not seen as functioning through the church age.

I quite like it this way.  If great men over many centuries cannot get an agreed clear picture of God's last days order of events prior to Christ's return, then, I suspect, neither can satan.  That's God's way.

It was the same with Christ's first coming. Men could not see the scriptural line until after the event and clearly, neither could satan.  Sometime after the event he had Herod kill all the baby boys under two years  of age hoping he could kill the Messiah by casting out a wide net.

It was exactly the same with Pharaoh and his target, Moses, the man who prefigured Jesus.

Despite the satanic hunt for them both and the murder and mayhem all around them, God was able to keep them both in that dark hour.

Like us, satan knows from scripture what the coming last days events, but like us, can only speculate on the exact order they will occur in.  How unnerving!

And like us, satan does not know the exact hour that Christ will come. No man knows that but the Father. He will suddenly come like a thief in the night.  How terrifying!

I like to think that every time someone blows the shofar (horn) satan momentarily thinks it is the final trump.

In Peter's day they mocked

'Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the father's fell asleep all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation' (2nd Peter 3:4)

That can no longer be said. This century saw the collapse of the 4,000 year old Chinese dynasty, the 1,100 year old Japanese Imperial Kingdom and the 400 year old Czarist empire of Russia. Add to that the recent fall of the Berlin wall and eighty years of communism in the U.S.S.R

After 1,900 years of exile Israel has her land back and the deserts are blooming. The gentiles are bringing Israel's sons and daughters back from afar. Their enemies have attacked one way and fled seven ways. Only the children of Israel - usually called the Jewish people - have solid scriptural grounds for expecting a future national revival.  Romans 11: 12 & 25 tells us that this will not occur until the 'fullness' - or the great multitude - of the Gentiles shall be converted.

It seems -with a reasonable degree of certainty- that investigators have now found the site of the Red Sea crossing - complete with archaeological evidence and with all details matching the Biblical account. (See 'The Exodus revealed' available from http://goccc.com/dvd.html)

It is absolutely certain that the real Mount Sinai has been found. Not in the Sinai peninsula as was always assumed but where the Bible said it was. In Arabia. (See 'The search for the real Mount Sinai' produced by Beyond the Legend and available from www.beyondthelegend.com or http://goccc.com/dvd.html)

It is interesting that a new discovery made under the microscope has convinced a group of (non Christian) scientists who previously believed in evolution to come out publicly and state that they can no longer support this theory. They state that the only theory which now explains the most recent find is that of 'a creator', but they state 'they have no idea who this might be' (see 'Unlocking the Mystery of Life' film produced by Illustra Media and available from www.illustramedia.com or http://goccc.com/dvd.html)

There is much debate with claim and counter claim about Noah's Ark having been found on the slopes of Mount Aarat.  The Turkish Government have been convinced enough to spend millions building an access road to and opening 'The Noah's Ark Park' at the site of a claimed discovery. (see http://www.pinkoski.com/noah.html)

It is interesting that in recent years many investigations - accompanied by books and films - have been made into the whereabouts of the Ark of the Covenant.  There has also been much speculation about the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem.  (see 'The Mystery of the Ark of the Covenant' available at http://goccc.com/myofarkofcov.html)

These are unusual and interesting times when every word of God is indeed proving to be pure. - Proverbs 30:5

Disasters seem to have taken a dramatic increase. A chart published by world vision in 1995 (issue 11) showed reported disasters over the past half century.

From a steady average of less than 1000 per decade the figure for the first 5 years between 1989 and 1994 suddenly jumped to 2223, with the projected figure due to reach a staggering 4446 by the year 2000.

(click here for 2011 update called 'Sinking sand')

The gospel is close to finally being preached to all people groups. [Read The Passion of the Christ in the editorial section.]

The last days harvest is being gathered in. The figures are staggering. There are more Christians alive today than in total since the church began. More than 70% of the progress in world evangelism from the time of Christ has occurred since 1900.  70% of that progress has happened since the end of world war 2 and 70% of that has occurred in the past decade.  According to the US centre for world missions approx 140,000 souls are brought into the Kingdom of God every day. (even these amazing figures are now some 5 years out of date)

In the period from Christ's birth to the year AD 500, nine translations of the scriptures were completed. During the next 1,400 years thirty additional translations were added. Since 1900 the Bible has been published in over 1,000 languages and that figure is rising rapidly.

However we ignore the dark and dangerous clouds, fast gathering on the horizon, at our peril.

Frances Frangipane rightly stated that the Sun (Son) drawing ever closer to the earth both melts the butter and hardens the clay.

A one world government is no longer unthinkable.

The cashless society is no longer unimaginable. An electronic identifying marker on head or hand is not only possible but now even makes sense as fraud, violent crime and international terrorism increase.

Apostasy is rife and growing. Large sections of the church are agreeing with the world on issues ranging from homosexuality to Harry Potter.  Leaders now speak of  'the other great faiths'  Jesus would not have done so. Neither would Paul.

In fact there is a growing view that all faiths lead to God and that all the various 'gods' are actually just different manifestations of the One God.

The previous Pope (John 2nd) accepted the mark of the goddess Shiva upon his forehead by a Shiva priestess in Bombay and then kissed the Qu'ran in Iraq. In Assissi he took part in a multi faith service with buddhists, muslims, hindu's, animists, snake worshippers, North American witch doctors, spiritists and fire worshippers declaring that 'they were all praying to the same God and that their prayers were creating spiritual energy that was bringing about a new climate for peace"

A one world religion seems to have taken its first faltering steps perhaps.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the USA had a 'long and passionate but orderly and polite', debate and a vote on the issue of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. A majority of the more than 500 delegates, called commissioners, rejected a proposal that said Jesus is the lone path to salvation.

A recent Church of England catechism states "Homosexuality may well not be a condition to be regretted but to have divinely ordered and positive qualities."  Such contra -Biblical statements as these would have been unthinkable in years past.  A Sunday Times random survey of 200 Anglican clergy in January 1997 showed that 31% of them did not believe in the virgin birth. 21% did not believe there was a devil. 33% thought God had no problem with sex outside marriage. 33% did not think homosexuality was a sin either. 12% did not believe in the second coming. Others didn't believe in the miracles of Jesus or His second Coming.  Two clergy didn't believe in heaven.  (Naturally the 'state church' and the long established traditional denominations draw more media attention than other denominations. Praise God each has its own deeply committed disciples too)

The apostate church sees these changes in thinking as bringing light into a dark world, while true followers of Christ understand these events as bringing about even greater darkness.

The apostate church sees those who believe that the Bible is either absolute or obsolete as rather outdated simple folk

The truth is that only God's Words bring light.  Men's words do not.

Psalm 119:113  The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

Since the terrible events in the USA now known as 9/11, Islam has suddenly been empowered on the world scene. For the first time the world fears the fanaticism of the Islamic zealots and is keen not to upset such people.  It may very soon be an arrest-able offence to claim publicly that there is only One True God and that Jesus Christ His only begotten Son, is the only way to Him.

But claim it we must and claim it we will.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Immorality is rapidly plumbing new depths of depravity.  Pornography is the most visited section of the Internet.  Many have likened society today to Sodom and Gomorrah. What God calls morally wrong and what society has traditionally called morally wrong is now being called right and society is passing laws to protect that 'rightness'  The days are close when it will be an arrest-able offence to merely quote aloud in public what scripture states about homosexuality. Already under enormous pressure from without and within, even the secular world sees the church is rapidly softening its traditional stance of agreeing with God.

The Daily Mail newspaper wrote this in its editorial comment of August 10th 1996.

..are we in danger of losing our moral bearings? There was a time when the church could confidently respond. No longer. These days the trumpet gives forth an uncertain note. Too many churchmen have surrendered to political correctness and moral relativism. Who can any longer be certain where the Anglican communion stands on such issues as divorce, homosexuality, abortion or euthanasia?

There is a sensing that while persecution will come in part from the world,  the major persecution will come from the professing church which does not separate itself from the world.  It has always been that way.

John 16:2-3  They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.

Judgment day came when sexual perversion dominated Sodom and Gomorrah.  As living letters from Jesus, while loving the sinner whom Christ died for we must always agree with God on the sin.

Leviticus 18  22  Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman, that is detestable

To do less is to deny life to those in terrible bondage to sin. Jesus taught us to have maximum love for sinners but zero tolerance on sin.

Matthew 5:30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

The occult is on a rising curve that seems to have no limit. New age and witchcraft have become mainstream. The world of Harry Potter holds a remarkable fascination for all ages and for the first time witches are not the 'baddies' in popular storytelling.  Occultism is now big money.. Buffy the vampire slayer and Sabrina the teenage witch are major TV series.  Satanism, once deeply secretive is rampant and becoming ever more blatant.

We are called not only to resist but to expose the darkness..

Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

From all this it is not hard to see why true Christians will become increasingly unpopular.

I believe it is the coming persecution of the church that will be the refiner's fire.

For Christ will have His bride - a glorious church - presented to Him without spot or blemish. The prayer of Christ for the unity of His Church will come to fulfillment in order that the world will see such a witness before Christ returns.

Malachi 3:2-3  But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire And like launderer's soap. He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, And purge them as gold and silver, That they may offer to the Lord An offering in righteousness.

The purpose of the former rain was to start the church and the purpose of the latter rain will be to complete the job.

It was the former rain - starting with a deluge on the Day of Pentecost - that carried the early Christians through great persecution, torture and death.  And so the gospel spread. Those opposing felt as though these 'on fire' persecuted Christians were actually turning the world upside down.

Acts 17:6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.

Likewise, I believe, the latter rain will enable end of the age Christians to complete the great commission in all the world in the face of even greater persecution torture and death than the early church had to contend with.

Please, please, take a moment to read just a sample of what it was like to live in the days of the former rain.

This was life as a committed disciple some 30 years after the Day of Pentecost.

Acts 9:23-25 Now after many days were past, the Jews plotted to kill him. But their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates day and night, to kill him. Then the disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall in a large basket.

Acts 13:49-50 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.

Acts 20:22-27 "And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, "except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. "But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. "And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more"

Acts 21:27 Now when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, stirred up the whole crowd and laid hands on him,

Acts 21:30 And all the city was disturbed; and the people ran together, seized Paul, and dragged him out of the temple; and immediately the doors were shut.

2 Corinthians 6:4-10  But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in sleeplessness, in fastings; by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love, by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, by honor and dishonour, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

2 Corinthians 11:24-27 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness

Paul was finally beheaded. Peter crucified. All but John died awful deaths.

There will be great boldness in the Holy Spirit, mighty numbers converted and many signs and wonders with the latter outpouring.

This will only serve to increase the persecution, not lessen it. Read the mirror image in the days of the former rain.

Acts 14:1-6 Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren. Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. But the multitude of the city was divided: part sided with the Jews, and part with the apostles. And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them, they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region.

Daniel spoke of people going 'to and fro' and 'knowledge increasing'. With cheap air travel and the super information highway in nearly every office and home we now stand in the midst of those days prophesied so many centuries ago   The Archangel Michael told Daniel that this would be 'at the time of the end'.

I ask if we the church are prepared in our hearts for these time of the end days so graphically and relentlessly recorded in scripture for us.  In my experience as an itinerant teacher I can, with full assurance, answer 'no'.

My experience is that the church is praying for, poised for, fully expecting great times of world wide revival and that alone.  My concern is that the Body of Christ be being dressed only for sunshine when in fact severe weather draws near.

When the sole focus of hope for the church is an end time world wide revival then I can say that we have veered somewhat off course.

Throughout the past 2000 years the great hope of the church has been the return of Jesus Christ. As the burden of the Old Testament writers was the first coming so the burden of the New Testament writers is the second coming. Not one New Testament writer fails to speak of Christ's coming and His return is mentioned 318 times in the 216 chapters. One verse in every 25 of the New Testament refers to it.

As we have seen, the scriptures show that there are two prophetic streams pertaining to Christ's coming at the end of the age. One stream shows the darkness increasing and the other shows the light increasing. [Read]

I believe we can sense Peter's mood as he wrote prophetically to the last days church

1 Peter 4:7  But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.

Presumably he would stand up in the pulpit today and say the same thing.

One particular scripture seems to express the truth of these opposites so simply and beautifully.

Isaiah 60:1-2 Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you.

You can only see the stars at night. The darkness reveals the intensity of the light and the light exposes the depth of the darkness

The office of prophet and the 'gift of prophecy' are not the same thing.  The gift of prophecy which Paul encourages all believers to seek is for building up, encouraging and comforting the church on a continual basis.

1 Corinthians 14:1-3 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

The office of prophet however is quite a different matter.

As I read the scriptures I see that one reason God raised up prophets was to warn His people - and anyone in the world who who would care to listen - of difficult times ahead   They rarely brought good news.  Even in the New Testament.

Acts 11:27-30 And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Acts 21:10-12 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. When he had come to us, he took Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, 'So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.'" Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem.

My concern is that I hear very few voices preparing the Body of Christ for the coming trials that scripture speaks so clearly of.  When I occasionally teach on this subject the reaction tends to be one of utter shock. It is is almost as though a huge portion of scriptures do not exist.

The Pastor of a very large, active and excellent church, was visibly shaken by this message and said "My goodness we'll have to put our hard hats on if we have you back"  Then he added, "Maybe we have been too triumphalist in our teaching"  My indelible memory of that visit is one of his flock approaching me in tears saying "I've waited eighteen months for someone to come and bring this message"

God designed us that we stand in balance when we place equal weight on both feet.  We row a boat in a straight line when we pull equally on both oars. We pedal a bicycle when we apply equal power to both pedals.  As in the natural so in the spiritual.

Without scriptural balance we go out off balance.

If we are out of balance we are easily knocked over.

Oh how I long to see the Body of Christ no longer enamored with the vain things of this world or trying to appease its growing band of critics by compromising with the Truth.

Where are the Jeremiah's with the authority from God to come amongst us to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant. (Jeremiah 1:10b)

As the latter rain continues and even increases, may it be that God's Spirit will pour out on your people group and mine. Praise God there is that very real possibility right now.

Yet alongside that reality I am continually preparing my heart for the dark and difficult days of great persecution that I know are coming down fast upon us. It is my heart's desire to see my brothers and sisters also prepared.

I began this paper by saying that the right note was being played but it was out of tune.  Any string on a musical instrument is kept in tune by stretching it between two opposite points.  Watch a violinist or guitarist tuning their precious instrument and you will see them delicately tightening or loosening the amount of tension at one end until that string's sweet note sounds forth.

It is the same tension for instance, between the truth of 'the love of God' and the truth of 'the fear of God'.

Listen to Jesus applying the correct tension in His teaching.

Luke 12:4-7 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

I pray that this paper helps to tune that end times string.

In conclusion, yes, by all means dress for summer, but keep a warm coat and hat close by.

Luke 21:25-28 And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; "men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. "Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. "Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.

Amen!

May the Lord bless you mightily!

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death

The Lord has, I believe, encouraged me in recent years to occasionally read the accounts of His martyrs over the centuries in order to strengthen my spirit for such days.

Books such as 'Foxes Book of Martyrs 2001' (ISBN 0-88270-875-9) and ' Jesus Freaks' by DC Talk (ISBN 157778072-8) have been very uplifting despite the subject matter they contain.  I especially recommend the latter as an introduction.
